hygge meaning

What is the meaning of hygge? 🤍 I asked this question on Instagram and I got so many great replies from you, so I thought I would share a few of them here.

Hygge is a feeling which is hard to translate or describe, although it is also something we all find familiar and comforting. It is a feeling I find is individual from person to person, but I do believe that the quote above saying it is ‘coziness of the soul’ is a simple and sweet way to put it which most of us can relate to.

I like to describe hygge as those small everyday moments that makes you feel happy and warm inside. It is the little things that sometimes can get overlooked, it is being cozy and relaxed in your surroundings, it is the things that sparks joy to you.

When it comes to hygge, it is something we find through all the senses; touch, sight, hearing, smell and taste. Smell, for instance, is a big part of creating a hyggelig atmosphere. And although there are certain smells that we know can have a relaxing and soothing effect, it can also be very individual from person to person which smell they associate with hygge. The scent of cinnamon is definitely one of my favourites. The smell brings me comfort and baking cinnamon buns helps to create a hygge feeling in my home. Other than that, I also love the smell of rain, pine trees, lavender and old books (I don’t know why but I just love to smell the pages of old books – anyone else?)

Have a browse through the quotes below and see what resonates with you. I would love to hear your thoughts too – what does hygge mean to you?

Or as Meik Wiking writes in the little book of hygge : Danish secrets to happy living:

“Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience, rather than about things. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe, that we are shielded from the world and allow ourselves to let our guard down.”

Not had enough hygge yet? I can suggest my posts how to create a hygge home, how to find hygge in everyday life and ‘Finding Hygge’ a documentary film exploring the real meaning of hygge. And if you are a big cinnamon lover like me, be sure to check out my easy cinnamon bun recipe which helps set the mood perfectly for autumn.
