With autumn on our doorstep, here are a few wardrobe essentials to transition you into the cozy season and take you into wintertime in true Scandinavian style. This guide is also a great way to discover a few new Nordic fashion brands you might not have heard about before.
1 The first thing I associate with autumn time is the start of sweater weather! Finally, it is time to layer up in cozy knits for ultimate comfort. With everything from fun, traditional patterns to a more minimal look, find a few of my current favorites from a few Scandinavian brands below.

Vega is a classical crew neck sweater with a design reminiscent of pullovers popular in Norway in the early 19th century. At that time hand-knitted sweaters and cardigans were the main garments worn during the cold season. With Vega, Norlender wish to revisit memories of the Norwegian heritage and craftsmanship.
2 With the cold weather we have in Scandinavia, sometimes sweaters are just not enough if you need to keep warm. It is important to choose good quality coats that will stand the sometimes hard weather conditions. I suggest having at least a classic wool coat as well as a solid parka as wardrobe staples.

If you want to look effortless Scandi cool you can’t go wrong with a minimal, classic, woolen grey coat like this one from COS. A classic belted style, this coat is made from softly textured wool with a full lining and hidden front buttons and will keep you warm.
3 Another important element of the Scandinavian autumn & winter wardrobe are boots and warm shoes. Make sure you choose a selection of timeless pairs and opt for at least one warm, waterproof option as it will be used regularly (especially if you are located in Scandinavia.)

Available in a wide range of sizes, styles and colours, the Ilse Jacobsen rubber boots are handmade wellies that can withstand even the hardest torrential downpour. It will for sure give your rainy day outfit that extra something!
4 And talking about rain, it is quite crucial to have a quality raincoat to see you through these wet months. Raincoats are also great for layering up with on windy days, go for a bright colored one to stand out from the crowd.

I love the look of this simple yet fun iconic Stockholm raincoat by Stutterheim. Designed for added protection as it covers all the way to the knees, it has a cool surprise message on the back that fits quite nicely in on a grey, rainy day don’t you think?
5 A little secret in the Scandinavian wardrobe is base layers often in wool (or ullundertøy as we call it). They are great items to layer under jumpers or trousers to get that extra bit of warmth during the coldest days, and a true Scandinavian always has quite a few of these in their closet.
From left: Kari Traa / Pierre Robert / Helly Hansen / Bergans
The Kari Traa base layer tops and bottoms are so decorative, you can also wear them on their own and look very fashionable in winter. With many diffrent patterns and colours avaivable, I am sure you will find something that suits your style.
6 Scandinavians knows the importance of staying cozy at home, so loungewear is very popular. I suggest a comfortable and oversized fit, soft fabric and teamed up with your favourite blanket for snuggly nights in.

With a great selection of pyjamas for both men and women, check out Rayville for that classic style that you will cherich for years to come. Comfortable when sleeping, but also the perfect companion when you just want to unwind at home, busy doing nothing.
7 And let’s not forget accessories. First up, scarfes! Is there anything better than wrapping youself up in a cozy scarf when you are going outside in the cold? I suggest having a minimal one in your wardrobe, as well as a patterned one too when you need to liven up an outfit.

A good quality, timeless scarf can lift any autumn or winter outfit. What about this wool scarf with fringed detailing from Acne Studios? Now, time to choose what colour to go by… I love this pink shade spotted via SS Life & Style blog.
8 When talking about accessories, we cannot miss out gloves. For a complete autumn and winter look, gloves are essential and an easy way to update your look without spending too much. You can never have too many gloves in your drawer.
From left: Nordic Store / Hestra / Samsøe & Samsøe / & Other Stories
An autumn walk is just not the same without these gorgeously nostalgic patterned mitts, why not knit them yourself so they are extra special? A Knit Story was first in Norway to create easy, little knitting knits with everything you need inside to create a range of items. These 312 Eco Voss mittens are available in a variety of colours and has the perfect Scandinavian look.
9 As we have covered most of the body bow, what is left is your head. Hats and beanies will keep you fashionable and warm this winter, so make sure you have one for every occasion. Because when it comes to Scandinavian weather during the next months, you have to be ready for it all.
From left: Wood Wood / Fjällräven / Weekday / Norse Projects
When winter is at its coldest in Scandinavia, you need a proper winter hat like this Nordic Heater from Fjällräven. This extra warm hat withstands wind and rain, and is made of comfortable, synthetic fur and warm ear flaps. Found via Gal meets Glam blog.
